About Us
The average American spends over 24 hours every week listening to music. A Kaiser Family Foundation study reported the amount of time 8-18 year-olds spend just listening to music has doubled in the last decade. Despite this trend, there is a disjunction between music appreciation and the accessibility of musical education. 1.3 million elementary students in the United States lack access to a musical education. In addition, since 2010, 40% of high schools have cut fine arts requirements from their curriculum. A Key to Hope is a non-profit organization that strives to provide music education to children impeded by socio-economic barriers. Research has indicated that children from financially burdened households are less likely to be enrolled in meaningful extracurricular programs such as music education. Environmental factors that deter youth from engaging in their studies are prevalent in underserved school systems. This manifests as a lack of life goals, unclear purpose, and suffering mental health. Studies have proven the long-term effects of music education can remedy these issues; by way of complimenting core academics and alleviating ambient stress and trauma. A primary reason for the inaccessibility of music education is the expense of an instrument. This is why we will provide students with instruments thereby providing a creative outlet along with other latent cognitive benefits. Our vision is to empower creativity by implementing new opportunities for musical education, predicated on the science showing that music can influence the cognitive, emotional, and social development of children. Since September of 2021, we have distributed both instruments and musical instruction to public schools, seminaries, churches, and children's homes.
Changing Our Local Community

The North Carolina Department of Commerce evaluates the state's 100 counties through a tier system representing various levels of economic distress. The 40 most distressed counties are labeled Tier 1, the following 40 are Tier 2, and the final 20 (and least distressed) are Tier 3. Pitt County, the home-base of our organization, recently improved from Tier 1 to Tier 2. Through philanthropic efforts, we are working to contribute to the music programs of underserved elementary schools to give young children more opportunities.

Changing Worship in The Church
Psalms 33:3 - Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
Our objective is to provide instruments to underserved churches, as we believe that worship can strengthen an individual's relationship with Christ. Additionally, music accentuates religious presence during worship, as the church body can shout passionately to the rhythm of guitar strings. The video shown below was taken after introducing guitars to a church in Karnataka, India.

Luke Thomas
Founder & President
Luke is the founder of A Key to Hope and serves as the President of the organization. He studied Public Health and Philosophy at East Carolina University. Developing a love for music at only six years old, Luke has played a variety of instruments; however, his favorite is the piano. After a traumatic brain injury, he played the piano on a daily basis throughout his recovery. Music helped Luke overcome the largest hardship in his life inspiring him to give others the same opportunity.
Mina Akhnoukh
Treasurer
Mina studied General Engineering at East Carolina University. Despite being a casual fan of Egyptian and American music throughout his early childhood and teenage years, he gained a greater appreciation for the impact of music after reading about the health benefits of incorporating music into daily activities. In addition to this, being exposed to acoustics in engineering curriculum has peaked his interest in the cross-discipline impact that music has. Being a Greenville, North Carolina native, Mina is interested in using this form of art to impact the vulnerable communities surrounding him and beyond.
